Legislators and Blue Cross Blue Shield Star at Board Meeting

Each check was for $5,000 and each school in the McAdory feeder pattern will get its fair share through a formula based on per student population. Representing the feeder pattern was Dr. Gayle Gober, principal of Greenwood Elementary.

The Hueytown school feeder pattern was represented by Chris Anders, principal of Hueytown Middle. His school will purchase new desks and lab tables with his share of the money.

Representative Juandalynn Givan brought a $10,000 check for Hillview Elementary school. Receiving the check was Principal Bert Stewart. The school plans to use the money for technology.

To help fight obesity in children and to have healthier adults, Jeff Adams of Blue Cross/Blue Shield handed out two $10,000 checks to two grant-winning schools. They were Greenwood Elementary and Clay Elementary.

Greenwood’s grant is a PBL, problem based learning, initiative. Students will have a virtual travel trip to Disneyland using pedometers. Their goal is a needed combined four million steps during the school year. There is a competition between classes for the most steps. Principal Dr. Gayle Gober wrote the grant and it uses science, math, and social studies for cross-curriculum.

Clay Elementary PE teacher Lauren Bickerstaff wrote her school’s grant to improve upper body strength and endurance. The grant includes a mural for their climbing wall, purchasing new floor mats for climbing protection, and buying pushup training tools, and supplies for a school garden.
